Settled
Checked against the primary document on October 9, 2026. The library's summary, tags and figures for this record were compared with the regulator's own document by an AI model (Claude) following written instructions, in a single reading of the order; an independent second reading of 60 SEBI records agreed on every field for 56, the four misses being penalty amounts; a later sample of 50 of the SEBI records added on 9 October agreed on every field for 46. No lawyer has reviewed them. A checked record can still contain errors, and checked does not mean endorsed. See how we check records or report a correction.

What is alleged to have happened
This settlement order of 9 December 2025 concerns Hemant Ghai, who co-hosted the show Stock 20-20 on the Hindi business channel CNBC Awaaz. SEBI saw a high correlation between the recommendations made on the show between January 2018 and January 2021 and trades by certain other persons.
A show cause notice of 24 February 2025 alleged that Mr Ghai communicated non-public information about the recommendations to be made on the show to certain people, who shared it with others and traded on it to make unlawful gains. It charged breaches of section 12A of the SEBI Act and regulations 3 and 4 of the PFUTP Regulations, and sought debarment, disgorgement and a penalty under section 15HA.
While the proceedings were pending he applied to settle without admitting or denying the findings. SEBI's internal committee recommended a settlement amount of Rs 1,45,60,000, he suggested an alternative calculation that the committee did not accept, and the advisory committee recommended the same figure. The panel of whole-time members accepted this in October 2025 and he paid in late October 2025.
The order disposes of the notice against him, with SEBI keeping the right to act again if his representations prove untrue or his undertakings are breached. No debarment is stated.
The record does not show any finding on the merits, because a settlement order makes none, nor the size of the profits made by those who traded, or how the order relates to the separate Zee Business guest-expert matter.
This library tags the matter as front-running, because the allegation was trading ahead of broadcast recommendations. The tagging is ours, not the regulator's.
For the regulator's own account of the facts, read the primary document linked above. This page deliberately summarises the structured record rather than reproducing the order.
What technique is this, and how does it work?
This action is tagged with one technique in our taxonomy. The tagging is ours: regulators charge statutory provisions, not technique names, so the mapping is an editorial judgement described in our editorial policy.
