CFTC v. John McAfee and Jimmy Gale Watson (pump and dump, 2021)
Alleged — pending
These are allegations. CFTC has filed an action; nothing in it has been proven, and the respondents have not been found liable. Everything described on this page is what the regulator alleges, not what a court has found. See our editorial policy.
Checked against the primary document on October 4, 2026. The library's summary, tags and figures for this record were compared with the regulator's own document by an AI model (Claude) following written instructions, with sampled and disputed records read a second time. No lawyer has reviewed them. A checked record can still contain errors, and checked does not mean endorsed. See how we check records or report a correction.
In March 2021 the CFTC sued John McAfee and Jimmy Gale Watson Jr. over a digital-asset pump-and-dump scheme. Watson consented on 14 July 2022 to an injunction, US$144,736 in disgorgement, an equal penalty and registration and trading bans; this record found no outcome for McAfee.

What is alleged to have happened
the Commodity Futures Trading Commission announced this matter on March 5, 2021 as release 8366-21. The respondents named are John McAfee and Jimmy Gale Watson (2 individuals, 0 entities). The action was brought in the U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York.
The complaint alleges that the defendants secretly accumulated digital assets including verge, dogecoin and reddcoin, promoted them on social media as valuable long-term investments, then sold as prices rose after McAfee's endorsements, for profits over $2 million. The CFTC called it the first manipulative scheme it had charged involving digital assets. This library tags the matter as pump and dump.
The conduct is recorded against crypto.
The release references a parallel criminal proceeding. Where a criminal case exists, the civil and criminal outcomes are recorded separately, because they resolve on different standards of proof.
Outcome so far. CFTC release 8558-22 says the Southern District of New York entered a consent order against Watson on 14 July 2022. The order, which the CFTC links, requires him to pay US$144,736 in disgorgement and a US$144,736 civil penalty, permanently enjoins him from further violations, and imposes registration and trading bans. The release says it resolves the claims against Watson only.
The lead defendant, McAfee, is not covered by the sources opened. SEC litigation release LR-25445 mentions that a notice of McAfee's death led to dismissal of the SEC's separate case, but this record did not find how the CFTC claims against him ended. The record therefore stays at filed and no money figures are entered for the matter as a whole. Checked on 2026-10-04: no outcome for McAfee found in the CFTC pages opened.
