CFTC v. Multiple Individuals and Entities (ponzi schemes, 2020)
Alleged — pending
These are allegations. CFTC has filed an action; nothing in it has been proven, and the respondents have not been found liable. Everything described on this page is what the regulator alleges, not what a court has found. See our editorial policy.
Checked against the primary document on October 4, 2026. The library's summary, tags and figures for this record were compared with the regulator's own document by an AI model (Claude) following written instructions, with sampled and disputed records read a second time. No lawyer has reviewed them. A checked record can still contain errors, and checked does not mean endorsed. See how we check records or report a correction.
In August 2020 the CFTC sued Dennis Jali, Arley Johnson, John Frimpong and three companies over an alleged US$28 million pool aimed at churchgoers. The District of Maryland case was stayed pending parallel criminal proceedings, and no final judgment appeared on the docket as of January 2025.

What is alleged to have happened
The CFTC announced the complaint on August 28, 2020 (release 8226-20) in the District of Maryland, covering 2017 to 2020 forex and bitcoin trading claims. The complaint asked for restitution, penalties and bans; the docket shows none ordered so far.
The record named the defendants only as "Multiple Individuals" and "Entities" and listed a ban that had only been sought; both are corrected.
This library tags the matter as ponzi schemes because the document describes it as a scheme paying earlier investors with later investors' money. The tagging is ours, not the regulator's: agencies charge statutory provisions, not technique names.
Outcome so far. The CourtListener docket for the District of Maryland case shows that in June 2021 the court granted a motion to intervene and stay the case pending the parallel criminal proceedings, that a clerk's default entered against Johnson was vacated in January 2024 with the stay left in place, and that counsel were still withdrawing in January 2025. The docket shows no final judgment, consent order or dismissal.
Checked on 2026-10-04: no outcome found on the CFTC pages or the court docket opened, so the record stays at filed. The criminal outcome was not checked.
